Celebrate Independence Day 2011 with John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, Paul Revere, First Lady Martha Washington
Online, June 29, 2011 (Newswire.com) - RRAuction will exhibit some of the scarcest and most highly sought signatures on-line this July. Autographs from Sir Isaac Newton, First Lady Martha Washington, patriots John Hancock, Benjamin Franklin, and Paul Revere, as well as Elvis Presley and the Beatles will be among the more than 1,500 pieces in the auction, which began on June 25.
The autograph of Martha Washington, America's "first" First Lady, Martha Washington, is considered among the scarcest of all examples in the hobby. As the nation celebrates another year of independence, a prominent Virginia collector has made available to truly remarkable pice-an ink signature, "Mrs. Washington"-on an off-white card. It is one of only a few RRAuction has ever handled.
The same collector has provided an equally scarce object in the form of a virtually nonexistent autograph from Isaac Newton. This is only the second time that RRAuction has been able to offer the scientist's signature. Other historic highlights include an exceptionally scarce 1785 handwritten document from Paul Revere (one of early American history's most sought after autographs); a 1787 document signed by Benjamin Franklin as president of Pennsylvania and endorsed merely a week after that state ratified the US Constitution; a high-level document from 1783 in which John Hancock agrees to pay long overdue wages to the now-retired Continental Army Chief of Engineers; a fascinating letter from Albert Einstein who suggests the recipient "read my own little book about the Theory of Relativity" and comments on the holocaust: "Concerning the Germans I have to remind you that they killed millions of innocent people in the most brutal way"; and a 1970 letter from a young Bill Clinton dreads being called to duty in Vietnam, admitting "I... am back in the pool with a high lottery number." The early, introspective excerpt from Clinton while deferring at Oxford during the draft, confessing his sentiments towards the "travesties like Vietnam."
A few of the finest offerings found in the music categories include a crystal-clear and amazingly rare publicity portrait from the film GI Blues, signed and inscribed by Elvis Presley. Keeping the King of Rock and Roll company are two vintage Beatles photos-the first a 1962 Parlophone Records promotional photo, the other an image of the band on a beach in the Bahamas during the filming of Help. Preceding both icons as a popular figure in music was composer and pianist George Gershwin, who took time to pen six bars from his famed 'Rhapsody in Blue.'
Fans of the National Pastime can take time from counting the days until the All-Star Game to cast a bid on three of the greatest Yankees of all time. The "starting lineup" includes a Babe Ruth photo given to the physician who once helped the Bambino bounce back from appendicitis, as well as a double-header comprised of "Iron Horse" Lou Gehrig and "Yankee Clipper" Joe DiMaggio. A historic trio of a different kind can be found on an Apollo 11 autographed crew photo inscribed to Don Young, center fielder of the 1969 Chicago Cubs.
The auction closes on July 13. For information, visit the RRAuction web site at www.rrauction.com.
