Dr. William Boothe has announced today that visual outcomes after cataract surgery can be improved with a program of computer-based vision training after a study made in June 2010.
Dr. Boothe says that the researchers evaluated the effectiveness of stimulation of the brain's visual cortex, using a commercially available computer-based vision training program, to improve vision after removal of cataracts.
A total of 60 subjects who had undergone cataract surgery that included implantation of one of five styles of intraocular lenses participated in the vision training sessions. Dr. William Boothe said that the mean age of the subjects was 68 years.
Uncorrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity at both distance and near were tested at 1 month and 3 months after surgery. In the intervening weeks, subjects underwent 20 sessions of vision training.
Dr. Boothe about LASIK
Lasik is an elective laser eye surgery that reshapes the front surface of the eye (the cornea) to improve vision. It is the most popular vision correction surgery performed in the United States and worldwide.
LASIK can correct a wide range of nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. Variations and enhanced versions of LASIK include all-laser LASIK, custom LASIK (also called wavefront LASIK or wavefront-guided LASIK) and multifocal LASIK.
