Rap Industry May Have Successful Future

A new class of rappers is ushering in a new era of rap. When you hear the words "rap video" you probably immediately envision gangsters dancing around with beautiful woman outside of a large house with loads of money being thrown around, while sitting on the hood of an extremely expensive luxury vehicle right? Well, a new class of recently discovered rappers is moving the rap industry away from its known associations with gang banging, womanizing and over-partying, and creating a rap movement/ style similar to that of the late-80s through mid-90s. You know, when rap videos were rather clean and the lyrics held a meaning.
Recently signed recording artists like the New Boyz, Audio Push, Cold Flamez, and California Swag District along with indie artists including Lil' iLL, Flip Major, The Fresh Boyz and female rapper Indigo Vanity are the faces of the movement. These rappers/ rap groups have not only successfully found fame with the use of various social networking sites while managing to promote a more positive style of rap, but they also head a dance craze that has spread worldwide in the past year through viral videos uploaded to YouTube. The dance craze is called "the jerk". The jerk is a dance that involves swaying movements of the legs with flashy spin-moves and jumps. The dance is accompanied by a style of clothing involving bright and flashy colors, and crazy 90s-styled hairdos. It looks like the retro look has become popular again. However, a new addition to the style is the popularity of tricked out pairs of skinny jeans with bright crazy colors and interesting designs imprinted on them. That's right parents; remember how you all couldn't wait until baggy jeans disappeared? Well now skinny jeans are in. Maybe one day our kids will meet in the middle and have normal fitting jeans.
Along with the evolution of the rap industry, rap videos are evolving. Aside from videos created by rappers that were given record contracts a few years ago, the videos are becoming less flashy and more entertaining. Rather than your typical rap video containing beautiful models dancing around in tiny outfits while people are tossing money everywhere, the newer videos actually look like a huge party that everyone wishes they were at. It looks like a great time to be a teenager. Though some of the artists' lyrics may be mildly explicit overall, the lyrics tend to tell stories of kids being kids, and the videos actually show how fun it is to be young. These videos are becoming so family-friendly, that they can actually be watched by both parents and kids and still be seen as entertaining to both groups. I have even stumbled upon a rap video by unsigned artist Lil' iLL that portrayed the life of a rapping homeless man that meets an interesting bunch of characters while pushing a tricked-out shopping cart around and rapping about his "swag" or style. Now tell me that is not unique.
The new class of rappers are now calling themselves rejects, jerks, and nerds, which is taking away the negative connotation that they carry. Talk about standing up for the little guys. These new rappers are saving the rap industry and having fun, while giving new positive meanings to words that could previously distinguish one as a social outcast. I never thought I would see the day where it was cool to be called a nerd or a reject. This group of artists is doing a great job as the role models to our youth. Maybe this is the medicine that the rap industry needed to get back to where it was in the 90s. Only time will tell.
