September is "Healthy Aging Month"
Online, August 24, 2009 (Newswire.com) - Healthy AgingĀ® Month is an annual observance developed to help individuals think more positively about growing older. But why just "think" more positively when you could actually do something to look and feel better, says posture expert Janice Novak.
Janice Novak, author of Posture, Get It Straight! Look 10 Yrs Younger, 10 Lbs. Thinner and Feel Better Than Ever, 2nd edition, says one of the early signs of aging is that we seem to shrink in height. But that aging slump is just spinal curves that become more exaggerated due years of bad posture - and that can be corrected!
"Research shows that a slumping posture can decrease height by as much as 2-3 inches," says Janice," which negatively affects breathing capacity and digestion, can cause back pain, and will impact general quality of life. But the great news is that the poor-posture slump can be reversed."
Janice suggests you stand in front of a mirror in your normal, slumped position and then try her One Minute To Better Posture Technique:
1. Pull in your abdominal muscles
2. Lift the front of your ribcage a few inches
3. Pull shoulder blades back slightly
You'll immediately look taller and breathe more deeply. Your back, shoulders and neck will feel more relaxed and your waist will appear smaller. Continue to make these corrections when you notice yourself slumping and you'll look and feel thinner, healthier and more confident.
Janice Novak, M.S., is considered the premier expert on posture. She is an internationally acclaimed author, speaker and wellness consultant, with over 20 years experience teaching a variety of workshops on healthy living.
