Tariq Drabu Welcomes GDC Pilot Scheme in 2015

Tariq Drabu said "It is welcome news that the General Dental Council is finally going to make use of NHS frameworks to ensure patient safety and manage dental patient concerns in the New Year."

Tariq Drabu is a leading dentist and specialist oral surgeon based in Manchester in the United Kingdom. He is one of the youngest dentists to ever graduate in the United Kingdom before working at some of the busiest dental hospitals in the UK and Saudi Arabia. Dr Drabu always showed a passion for oral surgery and completed his Fellowship in Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeon of Edinburgh on his return to the UK. Today he is the proud owner of the successful Langley Dental Practice and is also the Clinical Lead Dentist for the Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services at NHS Heywood Middleton and Rochdale. He also finds time in his busy schedule to mentor and tutor postgraduate dentists in oral surgery at the UCLAN Dental Clinic in Preston.

Tariq Drabu said “The General Dental Council has at last put a pilot scheme together which is due to be launched this month. The scheme will enable the NHS to manage any dental performance concerns, which have been managed by the GDC up until now.”

Tariq Drabu went on to say “The GDC and the NHS both have the ability to take action when patients have concerns about their dental treatment and the ability of their dentist. The GDC manage a higher volume of cases under their fitness to practice process, which could easily be handled at a local NHS level. The FTP process is clogged up with cases which have led to severe and justified criticism of the GDC from both the dental, profession and the GDC's own regulator the PSA. Due to its, inability to manage cases effectively the GDC has lost the confidence of dentists as an effective regulator. While the GDC fitness to practice process is imperative and needs to be managed effectively, using the NHS services could speed up processes for patients who have serious concerns about the treatment they have received.”

Tariq Drabu closed in saying “The pilot scheme is expected to provide an effective solution to performance management issues. It will take advantage of the NHS framework when fitness to practice isn’t impaired, while enabling the GDC to concentrate on cases where patients have been put at risk. This pilot scheme can dramatically improve the level of service patients receive, ensuring their concerns are heard and investigated within the dental industry.”
