United Kingdom Takes the G8 Presidency for 2013: Looking Into the Future of Global Finance
Online, January 4, 2013 (Newswire.com) - It has recently been announced that the United Kingdom has been appointed to govern the G8 nations for 2013. The G8 is an international consortium of the world's eight largest economies, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the United States of America. Since the group's inception in 1975, it has been tradition to annually rotate the presidency among the G8 nations. This year marks the sixth time that the UK has held the honor of hosting the annual summit wherein the members converge to discuss and resolve global socio-financial issues.
David Cameron, current Prime Minister of the UK, will spearhead the summit to be held in June at Lough Erne in Northern Ireland,. He has expressed a focus on combating trade protectionism, cracking down on tax havens, and promoting greater government transparency. Other crucial points that PM Cameron has revealed is to possibly invite countries such as Turkey or Israel to the summit, and to look at the idea of attaching the event to another socio-political congregation such as the UN General Assembly. Cameron will join the other G8 heads of state comprising of Canadian PM Stephen Harper, French President François Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Italian PM Mario Monti, Japanese PM ShinzŠAbe, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and USA President Barack Obama.
Despite the high-profile exposure and the rolling influence of the G8 Summit, the global financial supergroup has also taken criticism for not including membership of other floruishing nations with strong economies, such as China, India, and Brazil, as well as not tackling issues that plague society on an international scale, such as debt, global warming, and the AIDS epidemic.
But PM Cameron has disclosed his thoughts regarding the relevance of the group, stating: "It is clear that in 2013 the world will continue to face grave economic uncertainty. Our first priority will be dealing with the challenges in our own countries. But as leaders of eight countries making up around half of the world's entire GDP, the ambitious standards we set and the bold steps we take by working together through the G8 can make a tangible difference by firing up economies and driving prosperity, not just in our own countries, but all over the world."
The 39th G8 Summit will be held on June 17-18, 2013 in Lough Erne Resort, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
