Unplugged: Solo Exhibition By Pilar MartÃnez November 5 - 19, 2010

Working with memories as a way to embrace her Dominican identity while living in the United States has been Martinez's way of canalizing, through mixed media, the convergence of cultures and recollected experiences.
These recollections about childhood, family, relationships, food, melodies and transitions are the ones that have shaped this artist's sensibility and are constantly informing her work and its process. The concept "Nothing is wasted, everything is transformed," was instilled in the artist by her father since her early years and it is a concept in which her art practice is still enveloped. This merging of the new with the old is present in the artwork in the way she collages fragments of scrap paint from her palette, as well as using old records and elements that she collects through the years.
Addressing the nowhere land that is created between two cultural experiences, Unplugged is the result of a playful dance between memories and imagination influenced by a familiar rhythm that is embedded in the artwork as a celebration of lines, textures, colors and emerging figures in a constant process of discovery.
Pilar Martinez is an Atlanta-based artist who was born and raised in the Dominican Republic. She holds a BA in Advertising & Communication from Universidad Iberoamericana in Dominican Republic (Magna Cum Laude) and an Art Direction degree from Miami Ad School in Florida.
