Visiting St. Lucia: The Helen of the West Indies
Online, August 28, 2009 (Newswire.com) - St. Lucia is a small Island located in the eastern Caribbean Sea, northwest of Barbados and south of Martinique. First inhabited by Arawaks, Caribs, and then a few hundred years of war between the French and the British, this nation has incredible history and relics all over the island. It's a great place to spend a vacation or holiday without the overkill of tourist everywhere you go. I find this island the place to get away from it all, whilst enjoying the white and black sand beaches and warm waters.
There are a few airlines that fly to the island from the U.S., U.K., Canada, France, and other Caribbean countries. International flights arrive at Hewanorra Airport in the south of the Island in the city of Vieux Fort. From here you will be driven to the north where most resorts are located. Taxis are always available for scheduled international flights. You can call ahead or email arrangements before you travel to be picked up as well. Most hotels and some lodging offer transportation service as part of their service.
Where to stay: There are major resorts, private villas', small hotels, apartment rentals, and guesthouses for accomdations. It's always best to book early especially during the high season (Dec-Mar) and during the Jazz festival in May.
Tours: Many companies offer tours and excursions around the island. They are not hard to find even if you did not book tours before your trip. Tours can include water sports, zip lining, horseback riding, or just lying on the beach.
Do I need to rent a car? : If you are the types that like to go on your own versus with a group, this would be a good option. Renting a car is also good if you are staying off the beaten track such as, in a secluded villa, apartments in the community, or other lodging that requires private transportation.
Shopping: Duty free shopping and handmade local art's & crafts are easily available in the north, west, and south parts of the island.
Restaurants: Major hotels and resorts offer international cuisine. Rodney Bay is home to many great restaurants and food stands. Local restaurants serve Creole cuisine and the St. Lucian national dish. Fresh seafood is located all over the island.
Nightlife: There are clubs, pubs, and lime spots (hangouts) in the tourist areas. There's the Gros Islet Friday Night Jump up that's been a major attraction for years. You may also find a beach party that's popped up from out of nowhere.
Getting Married: Many couples find this island paradise a great place to tie the knot. Arrangements can be made through most major hotels or private companies that offer wedding services.
Safety: St. Lucia is a safe island. Although tourist need to be aware that there are opportunity thieves just like anywhere else in the world. Stay in common area's, do not carry wads of cash at one time, don't walk down dark unfamiliar streets late at night especially alone. With all that being mention, you'll find the Helen of the West Indies a calm and relaxing place to be.
